WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo police say the woman whose body they found in the Cedar River on Tuesday accidentally drowned.

Police were called to the 3900 block of Texas Street, near the Aspro plant, around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Witnesses told an officer the vehicle had been parked off the roadway on a gravel drive since Sunday.

Officers say the vehicle was registered to the mother of 35-year-old Shanda Kangas Werkmeister. The mother told officers that Werkmeister had been driving the vehicle, and she had not seen her daughter in a couple of days. After a search of the area, officers say they found Werkmeister's body floating in the Cedar River.

Captain Tim Pillack says that after an autopsy was performed in Ankeny on Thursday, it was determined that Werkmeister accidentally drowned.
