Iowa Ag Secretary: Farm bill needs to be passed quickly

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Congress returns to work this week in Washington and one of the most pressing issues is the Farm Bill.

The current Farm Bill is set to expire September 30.

The House rejected a plan last month, saying cuts to the food stamp program don't go deep enough.

Iowa's Secretary of Agriculture says congress needs to get a deal done first, then make tweaks to it, if necessary.

"We need that bill out there. It's not the big deal it once was to all our producers where our income was based on that farm bill but still it needs to get done. The uncertainty of not having it out there, possibly folks changing around crop insurance or doing other things to it, we need that to happen," said Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey.

Northey was in Waterloo Monday night for the Black Hawk County Farm Bureau's annual meeting.
