Linn County Fair 125th anniversary honors longtime fair-goer despite weather cancellations

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) -

By the time the 2014 Linn County Fair begins there will be a new building on the fairgrounds, the Lynn Dunn Memorial Building. It will be a place where events can be held year-round.

"His dream is finally becoming possible thanks to so many people," said Jean Dunn, Lynn's Wife.

Dunn practically lived at the fairgrounds. He loved interacting with the kids during 4-H events which used to be the only events at the fair, much like this year when a possibility of flooding canceled all grandstand and grounds events.

"It was kind of disappointing but in the other aspect, you're able to step back and really understand what our fair is really about," said Heidi Steffen, Marketing Manager for the Linn County Fair.

This year marked the 125th Anniversary of the Linn County Fair. Due to all the celebratory events, organizers expected to see 45,000 people, but due to the rainouts they only saw around 7,000.

The mission of the fair is to put on the 4-H and Future Farmers of America events, but the bands and festival help fund the farm events and livestock shows.

"There are still some of the expenses that have to take place," said Steffen.

Organizers won't know how the fair did budget-wise for a few weeks, but many felt it was nice for the 125th anniversary to go back to the fair's roots and feel the man they honored Sunday would approve.

The Linn County Fair has verbal commitments for next year from both Tracy Lawrence and Alien Ant Farm. Both of those big musical acts were supposed to play this year.
