Cedar Valley Jaycees Fireworks Festival about more than fireworks

Posted: Updated:

The Thomas girls enjoyed their time on the train, one of several rides at the carnival during the Cedar Valley Jaycees Fireworks Festival.

"I've been playing on the train and going on a pony ride," said Hayleigh Thomas.

The Thomas family all came together---even the grandparents.

"We wanted to do it all together with our family," said Danielle Thomas.

Admission to the National Cattle Congress was free, and even though there was a fee to do some of the activities parents say it was worth it.

"It's always a great time," said Dan Loeb, the girls' stepdad. "The fireworks are awesome. It's just a good family outing."

Ahead of the fireworks there's plenty of food and live music to enjoy.

This was only the second year of the Cedar Valley Fireworks Festival. Before Waterloo and Cedar Falls each had their own fireworks show. The Jaycees decided to combine and put on a big show for everyone to enjoy.

"We came together and tried to move the fireworks to a central location to be accessible by both communities," said Cheryl Meller with the Cedar Valley Jaycees.

Now the two Jaycees organizations work as one, serving the Cedar Valley. They provide scholarships, help kids, and put on events that bring smiles to young faces.

"That's what makes it all worth it," said Loeb. "I mean the smile on their face. That's why we're here."
