Waterloo has lost a true icon of the business community. Milt Roth, known to many as ‘Mr. Downtown Waterloo,' died July 4th at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home. He was 95.

"It's hard to in a snippet to try to explain all the things he's done for everyone and in the Cedar Valley and all the people his life has touched. Its hard to even imagine," says Kevin Schrieber, current General Manager at Roth Jewelers, who worked with Milt some 35 years.

Schrieber says, "Milt was just a fun loving very, very gentle man that enjoyed other people, enjoyed life, loved to entertain"

Roth's Jewelry, is the oldest business in downtown Waterloo. Started by Milt's father, Alvin, in 1931.  Milt always said the downtown was the heart of the city, and vowed to never move his business. "When everyone else was moving out to the Crossroads Center or to the malls, he decided to stay down town. He felt strongly about the Downtown and that the heart of Waterloo was in the Downtown area".

Milt Roth received numerous honors and awards over his lifetime. In recent years, the Courier recognized Milt in its inaugural 8 over 80 class of Cedar Valley leaders. He was a 2004 Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year and was named Iowa's‘Outstanding Older Worker' in 2005 by the Iowa Older Workers Employment Partnership.

Services are pending at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories in Waterloo.
