DURANGO (KWWL) -

Those who donated to a Durango man's charity, "Forged By Fire," are now being advised that the charity is a forgery.

Dubuque Police arrested Christopher H. Simms, 50, of Durango, and charged him with second-degree fraudulent practice and third-degree theft after an investigation into his charity, "Forged By Fire."

Simms allegedly set up the charity and used it to obtain money and merchandise from local citizens and businesses for his personal use.

Simms told individuals and businesses the charity would be used for donations to military personnel.

Simms is also charged with writing checks on a closed bank account in the name of his charity, "Forged By Fire."

Police are asking anyone who has been approached or solicited for donations by Simms to contact Dubuque Police investigator Nick Schlosser at (563) 587-3813.

Simms is facing up to five years in jail for the fraudulent practice charge and up to two years for the theft charge as well as fines.
