BUTLER COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Iowa State Patrol confirmed a 14-year-old boy was hit by a truck while crossing Highway 3 near Shell Rock Thursday night just minutes before a fireworks display.

Alex Petro, 14, was taken by medical helicopter to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo and then flown to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, according to a Shell Rock firefighter.

His condition was not available.

Petro was a Bremwood resident from Waverly.

Amy Juhnke, Director of Marketing Communications at Lutheran Services of Iowa, said four youth and two staff from Waverly's Bremwood campus did attend the Shell Rock fireworks show.

However, Juhnke said she could not confirm whether a youth was involved in Thursday's incident.

Juhnke said all staff go through extensive training and frequently take residents to events in the community for skill development.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the incident happened just before the fireworks show at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police reports indicate Petro ran out in front of a pickup truck driven by Joshua Rogers, 21, of Greene.

According to troopers, the vehicle was unable to stop before it struck the pedestrian.

The Iowa State Patrol said no citations had been issued as of Friday afternoon.
