Considering pet safety on the Fourth

As families across Eastern Iowa prepare for fireworks this week, experts say the family pets might not enjoy the sights and sounds quite as much.

According to the Cedar Bend Humane Society, they see a 30 percent increase in runaway dogs and cats over Independence day weekend. The animals are often frightened by the loud noises and bright lights that accompany celebratory fireworks.

"If you don't have to, don't bring them with you if you're going to an event," said Alan Malone, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Humane Society.

It's better to make sure animals are inside in an area where loud noises won't upset them, according to Malone.

He also said to check that pets have proper ID on them, just in case they do run off.
