WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Gas prices have been trending down in Iowa going into the holiday weekend.

Still, some are conscious of the price. Between Tuesday and Sunday, the average Fourth of July traveler is expected to drive 613 miles and spend $747.

Joseph Zabner stopped for gas in Waterloo on Tuesday while driving his son from Iowa City to a summer camp in Minneapolis. He said the price of fuel weighed heavily in their travel plans.

"It affected the car we're driving," he said. "We have an SUV, a large SUV, and we decided we're going to use this car that is more fuel efficient."

According to the American Automobile Association, the average in the state Tuesday was $3.45 per gallon, down nearly 40 cents from a month ago. It is also below the national average.

However, the owner of one gas station was happy to see the price drop. As cost decreases, business rises, he said.

"Everybody's traveling, going on vacation," owner Andrew Boeschen said. "I think it's been real busy."

However low, the price tag is hard to forget for some.

"Even though gas prices are going down a little, they're still fairly high," Zabner said. "That makes you think twice about fuel efficiency."
