A Waterloo man was sentenced on July 2 after being found guilty of using fake identity documents to gain employment and falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen.

Julian Reyes Ferrer-Hernandez, 27, of Waterloo, was sentenced in Cedar Rapids to 407 days in prison. He must also serve three years of supervised release after that time.

His sentencing comes on the heels of a April 2 jury verdict that found him guilty of one count of unauthorized use of a Social Security number, one count of unlawful use and possession of a fake Social Security card and fake permanent resident card to gain employment, one count of making a false claim of being a lawful permanent resident alien, one count of falsely claiming to be an U.S. citizen, and one count of making a false statement regarding his employment during an interview with immigration officers, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office Northern District of Iowa.

Ferrer-Hernandez was initially arrested on in Waterloo March 14 for public intoxication.

He then provided officers with six different identity cards, several of which were forged. The permanent resident number he provided was assigned to a Nigerian citizen.

Ferrer-Hernandez is a citizen of El Salvador.
