New parking program starts in Iowa City

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Starting Monday, drivers in Iowa City will be able to take advantage of one hour of free parking.

Under the First Hour Free program, parking rates in four downtown ramps will increase by 25 cents per hour, but the first hour is free.

Officials hope it will make parking easier and with the extra hour increase traffic in the downtown shopping area.

"I think it's a nice idea. I don't know how big of an impact it will have on our store because we have a lot of foot traffic with the student population but I definitely think people will like it, " said Teresa Rensimer, with Revival in Iowa City.

Iowa City will also be installing more than 1,000 new smart meters that are solar powered and are able to read credit cards.
