10 facing federal gun charges in Cedar Rapids

Posted: Updated:

Ten men are facing federal gun charges in Cedar Rapids after a sting, and police are looking for another man in connection with federal weapon charges.

The Cedar Rapids Safe Street Task Force made the arrests as part of a renewed effort to keep the most dangerous criminals off the streets.

The team was formed in 2009 in response to a spike in violence.

The recent arrests are part of a larger effort targeting criminals with guns.

Friday, officers in Cedar Rapids sent a message loud and clear to the city's most violent criminals.

"If you're going to illegally possess weapons, don't do it in Cedar Rapids," said Sean Berry, U.S. Attorney of the Northern District of Iowa.

A team of local, state, and federal officers combined to arrest ten men on Federal gun charges.

"They sit down.  They strategies.  They find the worst of the worst," said Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman.  "They target these individuals.  They go after them, and are successful in locating and charging them.

Police say many of these men had already been convicted of other serious crimes.

Now, they could be facing more jail time.

"Often times, the U.S. Attoney's office has a more advantageous sentencing scheme that can deliver a bigger bang for the buck," said Linn County Attorney Jerry VanderSanden.

Police continue their search for Andre Corbett.  He's 5'10", 220 pounds.

Corbett's last known address was 11 Glenbrook Drive SE #204 in Cedar Rapids.  He is wanted on federal weapons charges.

"It's possible that he could still be in possession or could obtain possession of a firearm," Jerman said.

The recent arrests are part of the city's efforts to address gang and drug activity.

Police say it's working.

"Any time you have dedicated law enforcement officers, focused in a specific area, in this area of reducing crimes of violence, it does improve the safety," Jerman said.
