WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A child was rescued from the Cedar River Thursday after falling in near the downtown Waterloo splash pad.

Witnesses say a young boy approximately 7 years of age fell into the water near the RiverLoop Amphitheatre.

They say the boy was sitting on the cement next to the river where there is no railing or fence.

"We were up here at the splash pad, and a girl was up here with two kids she was babysitting," witness Rochelle Hendricks said. "She wasn't paying attention and the little boy fell in the river.

"He was floating down. She did jump in after him. She couldn't stop herself though," Hendricks added. "She caught a rock, and I jumped over the fence, and I pulled the boy up to safety."

The boy was conscious when he was pulled out and appeared to be doing fine.
