WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Friends and family members are grieving the loss of a 20-year-old Jesup woman.

Katlyn Leekley was riding a motorcycle with her boyfriend, 24-year-old Derek Martie, on Saturday night.

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office said 22-year old Bryan Cornwell swerved over the center line on Dubuque Road, hitting Martie and Leekley and sending them into the ditch.

Deputies said Cornwell was arrested eight miles away from the crash site.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson said Thursday that Cornwell faces multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and operation while intoxicated.

Friends of Leekley hope others learn a valuable lesson.

"I lost a really good friend because of somebody else's careless mistakes, and it's just -- it hurts," said Jamie Billington, a friend. "It hurts a lot."

Billington said she's been friends with Leekley since the ninth grade. She said she got to say goodbye to her in the hospital on Wednesday.

"I told her I loved her and held her hand," she said.

Billington and other friends remember Leekley as a fun-loving girl who loved animals and her family and friends.

"She didn't even get to live her life," said Jessie Geiger of Waterloo.

Friends have set up a memorial account for Leekley's family at Veridian Credit Union.

Donations can be made to the "Kate Leekley Benefit" fund or online at: https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/6Xqza
