A new study is shedding some insight into speaking with teens about healthy ways to lose weight, according to NBC News.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota looked at survey data for about 6,000 teens and their parents.

They found when conversations between parents and children focused on weight and size, the teens were more likely to resort to unhealthy dieting and other weight-control measures.

It also found they were more likely to resort to these measures if it was the father who commented on the teen's weight.

Experts suggest parents focus the conversation on healthy eating, which is more likely to be effective, and less likely to lead to unhealthy dieting.
