Heavy rains force evacuations at Yellow River Forest Campground

Posted: Updated:

Flooding due to heavy rains Saturday morning forced the evacuations of more than 80 campers at a campground in Allamakee County.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the campers were forced to leave Yellow River State Forest's campground after Little Paint Creek went out of its banks.  More than 80 campers were spending the night there.  The evacuations started at mid-morning and continued until about 4 p.m. Saturday.  69 campers were brought out by ATV while another 25 were able to drive out after rangers were able to clear a path.  No-one was injured.  However, one woman who tried to drive out was swept into a bridge.  She was able to climb out of her car through her sunroof and get to safety minutes before her car was swept into a bridge.  The campers were taken to an emergency shelter set up at the Harper's Ferry Community Building in Harper's Ferry.
