WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Riverfront Sports Park in Waterloo is now newly renovated with eight new baseball fields.

The local nonprofit organization Build Our Ballpark partnered with Waterloo Leisure Services to update the fields. The project took 20 months to complete with funding close to $1 million.

The park now has new infields and outfields, an irrigation system and electronic scoreboards. Bob Hellman of Build Our Ballpark said they are now at the caliber of major league fields.

Local leagues and traveling teams will be playing on the fields. The Optimist Club of Waterloo said after years of playing on older fields, the renovations will be a home run for the club.

"We were playing on some fields that maybe had rocks in the infield, sand burrs in the outfield, they had no outfield fences," said Errol Brown, treasurer of the Optimist Club.

He said the higher quality of the fields is likely to attract many people to Waterloo along with the traveling teams for tournaments.

The opening ceremony for the renovation is Thursday, June 20 at Riverfront Sports Park in Field 2. After the ceremony, there will be games on six of the eight fields.

Attendees can enjoy free popcorn.
