Grassley calls out IRS on $70 million worth of bonuses

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

One Iowa representative is calling out the Internal Revenue Service for giving out bonuses despite forced budget cuts.

Senator Charles Grassley (R) says the IRS is about to pay $70 million in bonuses to employees.

In a letter, Iowa Senator Charles Grassley demanded an explanation from the IRS' acting chief.

The Internal Revenue Service says it is legally bound to pay the bonuses because of an agreement reached with the national treasury employees union.

But Grassley argues, "That's $70 million that the IRS should use for other things in their department."

The controversy comes at a bad time for the IRS.
