Overnight fire in Cedar Rapids raising questions

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A fire early Tuesday morning is raising some questions. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department was called to Flagstone Apartments complex on the city's northeast side and left after there were no flames.

"Before these guys happened, they had an ambulance, not an ambulance, but fire department and police and all that out here," said Ken Visich, neighbor.

Forty-five minutes later crews returned to a blazing living room. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says they've heard multiple stories about what happened and each one was very different. That's what's making it difficult for them to determine what caused the fire.

Andrea Hoskias and Bridget Rackley say it's a shame to have something like this happen near their homes.

"People need to stop being inconsiderate and be considerate and think about other people," said Hoskias.

According to the apartment's management company one person's name was on the lease. Neighbors say he was rarely home and two friends were had been staying at the apartment early Tuesday when the fire happened.

The damage was contained to the one unit, which neighbors say they're grateful for.

"I was really worried about losing all my stuff. I have a lot of valuable, important stuff I just didn't want to lose," said Rackley.

The unit that did catch fire was completely destroyed and will have to be rebuilt.
