ANKENY (KWWL) -

A 13-year-old faces some serious charges after leading police on a car chase early Sunday morning.

Police say they tried to stop the car just before 2 a.m. in Ankeny after a report of reckless driving with a flat tire. But instead of stopping, the driver hit the gas, flying through a construction site and hitting several construction barriers.

At one point, the driver slowed down enough that police thought he was surrendering, but then he took off again.

"That's how we thought the chase might be over, but then he took off again," one officer told KCCI. "When these chases occur, a lot of times you're thinking it's some hard criminal, somebody's running for a pretty significant violation, is what you're expecting."

Eventually, the driver lost control and hit a tree.

At gunpoint, the driver surrendered, and police discovered that the driver was a 13-year-old who stole a relative's car.

"We're all expecting this to be some big-time criminal and here was a 13-year-old boy who took his grandma's car without permission," the officer said.

The boy is charged with an OWI, reckless driving, eluding police and driving without a license. Since he is a minor, we are not reporting his name.
