Drowning remains the leading cause of unintentional injuries for children between the ages of one and five.

The week is meant to raise awareness and education for drowning prevention strategies. The Iowa Department of Public Health notes that most drowning deaths and injuries are preventable.

Several simple methods include:

  • Stay in arm's reach of the child
  • Swimming lessons for kids ages one to four are proven to reduce risk
  • Securely-fitted life jackets
  • Don't hold your breath too long
  • CPR

These apply to activity on lakes as well.

In 2011, 84 percent of people who drowned in boating incidents were not wearing life jackets.
