Cedar Rapids museum opens Faces of Freedom exhibit.

It was a celebration of freedom today at the National Czech and Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids.

Former NASA astronaut and Apollo 17 commander Eugene Cernan helped cut the ribbon this morning for the faces of freedom exhibit.

Cernan is the son of Czech and Slovak parents and has a personal connection to the exhibit,  which features artifacts, clothing, pictures and stories of people who came to the United States for the freedoms and opportunities many of us take for granted.

"Some of the exhibits here are important to all Americans particularly the young Americans, folks of your generation because we assume and we take for granted so many of the opportunities we have in this life. " Cernan Said.

Faces of freedom is a new, permanent exhibit at the museum with more than seven-thousand square feet of space.
