CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A camp kicking off this weekend is allowing kids with a genetic disorder to have a camping experience they might not otherwise have.

Camp Tanager's Hemophilia Camp in Cedar Rapids will be held Sunday, June 16 through Friday, June 21.

It's the only camp in the Midwest for children with the bleeding disorder.

The camp annually serves about 50 to 60 children, ages 6 to 17, and teaches age-appropriate skills to deal with the medical condition effectively.

With medical staff from the University of Iowa Hospital and camp counselors, the camp balances safety and fun.

The children can take part in a variety of activities, including, swimming, archery, hiking and other sports. The camp hopes the kids walk away with a better understanding of how to manage hemophilia successfully.

The bleeding disorder primarily affects males -- about one in every 7,500 in the United States.
