Floods in Greene a close call

Posted: Updated:

In Greene, O'Brien's Service and Towing is usually about 15feet from the waters of the Shell Rock River. Thursday, it was even closer, much to the chagrin of owner Mark O'Brien.

"Well, we don't know how high it's going to get," O'Briensaid. "It's been around the building now for probably a good two and a half hours, maybe a little longer."

Waters started rising early Thursday morning in Greene, as run-off from severe weather roared downstream. O'Brien started preparing early, and by mid-afternoon, he felt ready.

"I feel a whole lot better now that stuff is cleared out of the shop," he said.

His business was hit hard in the 2008 floods, and he hasn't forgotten. That's why he, like many business and homeowners, aren't taking any chances.

"It's kind of holding its own, so hopefully all of this was for naught, but we prefer to be prepared anyway."

Just next door, the back porch of Tuffy's Bar and Grill opens onto the water. Owner Clint Cordes said he got everything off the floor as soon as possible.

"It's been a long day," he said.

His trailer has been packed and ready to go for hours.

"We're right on the water so you just take your chances," he said. "That's all you can do."

Back at O'Brien's, he's just happy they had time to prepare.

"I told everybody today: I hate the river," he laughed. "But like I said, it's a love/hate relationship. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else."
