WATERLOO (KWWL) -

About 100 Eastern Iowans gathered Thursday night for a fundraiser to honor a Waterloo East football star who became the Iowa Hawkeyes' first All-American nearly 100 years ago.

Lieutenant Fred Becker died heroically in World War I in 1918 and his name is on the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 in Waterloo where tonight's event was held.

Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz talking with East High legend Jerry Moses was the keynote speaker-- Ferentz says Becker's story which parallels the legendary Nile Kinnick-- is one that everyone should learn.

Five years ago Mike Chapman brought Becker's story to light in a book-- since then Becker was inducted to the Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame--and a Waterloo School was named in his honor.
