Kayla Armstrong: Athlete of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

On Saturday -- Xavier senior Kayla Armstrong got to hoist a state soccer championship trophy -- not for the first -- second -- or third -- but for the fourth time in her high school career --

on Saturday -- she got to that title with 8 others in the Saints senior class

Since day 1 of freshman year, this senior class has grown up together. Coming in as one, leaving as one was a big goal of ours.

Armstrong concluded the weekend as the all-tournament team captain for the second straight season -- she finished the season with a career high 47 goals to help the Saints to their 8th straight championship -- and for her -- just being a part of that history is something special --

"So many people have given and sacrificed for it. It's not just about one person. To be able to just be a part of it and to have the X on your jersey, it's truly something that will be missed."

and while soccer will be her only athletic endeavor next year at Drake -- high school's been a different story --

this past February -- she was also named the all-tournament captain at the state basketball tournament -- after leading that team to the 4th state title in school history -- the honor was a bit unexpected --

"I would say I was more surprised by my basketball, but they're both incredibly special.

but the Soccer field is where her true talents lie -- she leaves Xavier with 115 goals in her final 3 years -- but even though she won't be on the field -- she hopes the Saints dynasty carries on

"We weren't the ones that cursed the streak, but next year we'll be back cheering them on and hopefully be involved with the seniors, and I hope we left all the underclassmen with a good impression, so they can try to carry it on next year.
