Posted: Updated:

One person was killed and five others injured when two cars collided at the intersection of Highway 30 and 32nd Avenue, near Atkins, on Tuesday evening.

Benton County Sheriff Randy Forsyth says 27-year-old Dylan Strong of Fairfax was headed west on Highway 30 at around 5:41 p.m. when his car collided with a car driven by 18-year-old Jacob Novak of Shellsburg, which was headed south on 32nd Avenue.

Forsyth says Strong and his passenger, 23-year-old Brenda Skalsky of Walford, were both taken to a Cedar Rapids hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Novak and three passengers, 20-year-old Samantha Ary of Garrison, 22-year-old Kyle Kirchner of Vinton and a one-year-old child, were also taken to a Cedar Rapids hospital. Novak died a short time later. The three passengers received what Forsyth calls non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
