BELMOND (KWWL) -

No injuries are being reported, but a tornado destroyed a well-known Belmond restaurant and several homes and businesses Wednesday night as severe storms rolled across much of north central and northeastern Iowa.

The popular Cattleman's Steak and Provisions Restaurant in Belmond took a direct hit from a tornado as it struck the small Wright County community late Wednesday afternoon.

Two employees, including owner, Deb Abel, were inside the restaurant when the tornado came through Belmond. They left the restaurant just before the tornado hit.

Three other Belmond businesses also sustained significant damage as the tornado moved from Wright into nearby Franklin County.

There are damage reports at Abilene Machine, Howard Enterprises and Farm Advantage, all on the north side of Belmond.

Several northside Belmond homes are also reported damaged from the tornado, and numerous trees and power lines were toppled by the slow-moving twister.

Longtime Belmond residents know what kind of damage a tornado can do. In October of 1966, a mid-afternoon monster tornado killed five people and damaged or destroyed more than 600 Belmond homes and businesses.
