Update: Art project caused Iowa City bomb scare

Police say a suspicious package that shut down an area near the Ped Mall in Iowa City Sunday turned out to be an art project.

Police say the package was an electronic art piece composed by a local artist named Russell Jaffe.

Police say Jaffe worked with investigators to determine the art piece was purchased by someone in January.  That person put the art piece into an abandoned newspaper vending machine for someone else to discover.

Jaffe also posted this on his Facebook page about what happened:

"Flash forward 6 months and this Iowa City art-loving lady left my artwork and poems in the STRANGE TRACTOR newspaper stand on the corner of Washington and Dubuque during Arts Fest. Apparently people use that box as a kind of off-grid arts freeshare; you leave something and take whatever has been left in kind."

Later in the same post, Jaffe said, "...having my art and poetry eviscerated by a bomb-destroying robot is the thing I realized I never knew I always wanted."
