CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Two days a week Elizabeth Kacere is the first person to arrive at the Witwer Center in Cedar Rapids. She decorates the tables and sets up displays, helping the place where seniors gather to eat their Meals on Wheels together feel more like home.

"Everything on these tables means something to someone," said Kacere.

Kacere is 82 years old, which helps her connect with the seniors at the center.

"When you have that older adult who was walked that journey in life and who understands the older adult issues, it's just outstanding," said Myrt Bowers, Witwer Center.

Kacere is now being recognized for her efforts. After 500 people were nominated, Kacere was voted the Iowa winner of the Home Instead Senior Care's Salute to Senior Service Award.

"I enjoy doing this," said Kacere. "I'm very thrilled about it. And hopefully I've made someone's life just a little happier."

According to the seniors at the Witwer Center, Kacere has.  The $500 she won as the state winner will go back to center, continuing to help make days better for the seniors.

The Witwer Center will hold a reception for Kacere on June 29th. The next day the National Salute to Senior Service winner will be announced. If Kacere wins she gets $5,000 to donate to charity, which she says would also go to the Witwer Center.
