Eastern Iowa softball team takes donations to Oklahoma tornado victims

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Junior Wahawks softball team traveled to Oklahoma City for a softball tournament shortly after a tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma.

Their trip turned into much more than a softball tournament and visit to the Women's College World Series.

"When the girls found out about the tornado destruction they all right away wanted to give back or do something," said Shelly Carrasco, director of the Junior Wahawk softball organization in Waterloo.

"They seen families displaced so I think they realized how fortunate they are to be without destruction here in Iowa, and they also experienced what it means to give back to other softball teams and their communities and their communities so that's a huge experience for little 12-year old girls to learn at such a young age," said Carrasco.

The softball team held a bake sale before the tournament and collected approximately $100 for victims of the tornado.

They also donated clothing.

"They have nothing, and so they need things," said 13-year old Colleen Duffy of Waterloo.

The Junior Wahawks plan on collecting donations of gently used or new softball equipment during their final tournament on August 15th at West High in Waterloo.
