UPDATE: Coralville dam outflow going to 14,000 cfs, boating ban lifted

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Army Corps of Engineers has dropped the outflow of water from the Coralville dam to 14,000 cubic feet per second from 17,400 cfs.

At the final daily press briefing regarding the flooding in Johnson County, officials announced that the elevation of Coralville Lake dropped from 704.64 feet to 703.8 feet over the last 24 hours. That drop has allowed them to reduce the outflow from the dam.

Officials expect to reduce the outflow to 12,000 cfs on Friday and then to 10,000 cfs on Saturday.

Because of the reduced outflow, Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek announced Thursday morning that the recreational boating ban that has been in place on the Iowa River, south of the dam, will be lifted at Noon Thursday.

An outflow of 12,000 cfs will help Iowa City officials get Dubuque Street cleaned up and re-opened which will assist with traffic issues and emergency response. They hope to have Dubuque Street open next week.

"Iowa City is going to be able to get down there and take a look at cleanup and if any repairs are needed, but they are not making any guarantees until early next week that Dubuque will be open," said Mickey Miller, spokesperson with Johnson County Emergency Management.

The three mandatory evacuation orders in Johnson County do remain in place. The sheriff's office expects to be able to get into those areas in the next 48 hours to evaluate the status of those orders.
