NEW YORK (KWWL) -

A new study finds that only 5% of restroom users properly wash their hands, according to NBC News.

A group of researchers at Michigan State University observed more than 3,000 people after they used the bathroom, and found that 1 of 10 did not wash their hands at all.

Of those people who did wash their hands, up to 20% of people didn't use soap, and only 5% washed their hands for the fifteen seconds or more recommended by the Center for Disease Control.

Men were worse than women in the study, they were more likely to skip washing, and when they did, only half of them used soap.

People were more likely to wash their hands if there was a sign reminding them to do so, and if the sink was clean.

According to the CDC, more than half of food-borne illnesses are directly related to dirty hands.
