Blue Zones one-year review presented to Cedar Falls City Council

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Coordinators of the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Blue Zones Project presented their one-year update to the Cedar Falls City Council Monday evening.

Blue Zones is a project that works with communities to improve individual quality of life by encouraging healthier choices.

Presenters stressed the importance of enacting ‘microshifts,'minor changes in behavior with long-lasting effects. One example they gave is a participating Blue Zones church that has stopped serving donuts after services, and switched to a healthier choice.

They also cited a recent Gallup poll that found that 89% of area residents are aware of the Blue Zones Project. It also found that 68% are actively engaged.

In the future, organizers hope to recruit more area employer sand schools to encourage healthy choices, in addition to drafting a sustainability plan for the conclusion of the two-year program.

If Waterloo/Cedar Falls completes the two-year certification process, they will become the first communities in Iowa to become certified.
