Cedar Rapids Police Department asking for community help in gun buyback

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The City of Cedar Rapids is continuing to move forward with a gun buyback program.

The city's police department is calling the program Cedar Rapids Takes Aim at Guns, or CR TAG.

The program will allow guns to be turned in this summer in exchange for a random gift card worth $100. The buyback will be funded entirely through donations.

"A lot of times people just continue to hold a gun because they don't know what to do with it," said Wayne Jerman, Cedar Rapids Police Chief. "This gives them an avenue to receive some form of compensation for giving us that gun."

The city is asking for gift card, check or cash donations to fun the program. A date for the buyback has not been set.
