Iowa residents enjoy free fishing weekend

As the sun shines bright in the sky, many are making their way outside. But this weekend some Iowa residents were able to take advantage of Free Fishing weekend while that sun was shining.  Toree Brimeyer sat quietly, with a fishing rod in hand on a rock outside Dubuque's Lock and Dam #11, patiently waiting for some fish to bite. Brimeyer has always enjoyed fishing in Dubuque with her family and has been doing so for eight years.

"I don't really know what I like about it, I just like catching fish." Brimeyer said.

Brimeyer and her family was one of many families out enjoying the river and taking advantage of Iowa's Free Fishing weekend. A weekend were Iowa residents can fish without a fishing license, essentially for free. However, all other fishing regulations still stay in place.

A couple blocks away from Brimeyer sits The Bait Shack. Matt McFadden is manager of The Bait Shack, he says he always notices an increase in business during free fishing weekend.

"Generally we see an increase in sales during free fishing weekend. It's nice that this year it correlates with the first day of school getting out. A lot of people utilize it [the weekend]. We got the first nice day in a long time to so that is helping." McFadden said.

Free fishing weekend continues till Sunday.
