MARION (KWWL) -

A new dog park opened up in Eastern Iowa Saturday morning.

Officials held a "leash cutting" for the new K9 Acres off-leash dog area at Squaw Creek Park in Marion. The dog park is 11 acres in size and includes a walking trail and training yard.

The park was built through a partnership between the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation department and the group K9COLA (K9 Citizens for Off-Leash Areas).

"Dog parks are one of the most demanded park facility, park amenities in communities throughout the country in the last ten years," said Sven Leff, Director of Parks & Recreation. "It's a beautiful 11-acre park that dog owners from all over the region can come and enjoy."

The park cost around $100,000 to build. About $25,000 came from donations and the rest through capital improvement funds from the City of Cedar Rapids.
