Xavier Girls keep alive hopes of 8th State Soccer Title

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Friday afternoon -- Cedar Rapids Xavier looked to get past Pella to take a shot at their 8th straight state title --

and they got things started off right -- senior Kayla Armstrong does it herself -- beating the keeper for her 41st goal of the season --

and the Saints didn't let up -- as Sammi Shepherd knocked home the goal in the bottom left corner for the 2, oh lead --

and it was all Saints -- Armstrong scored 2 more for a 3-goal night -- she'll get a shot to go out on top again as Xavier rolled Pella 4, nothing

Earlier in 1-A -- Center Point-Urbana would look to upset second ranked Heelan for a shot at a title --

down 1, nothing in the first half -- the Stormin' Pointers get the equalizer on a hard shot from freshman Grayson Gifford -- this game went to the second tied at one --

but Heelan counters in the second with the goal from Tristan Bow-loo -- that would be the winner as CPU bows out in the semis 2, 1 --

Iowa City West was the only Eastern Iowa 3-A team left standing -- looking to get past number 2 Dowling Catholic --

Second half -- Women of Troy already down 1, nothing -- and the Maroons add to that lead with a great feed from Maddie Avery to Claire Caligiuri -- 2, nothing dowling late --

West with a chance to pull closer -- but Ali Peterson's penalty shot is saved by MacKenzie Lasnek --

Rough offensive night for Iowa City West as their seson ends with a 2, nothing loss --
