Athletes of the Week: Columbus Girls Tennis

For the 15th time since 1983, the Waterloo Columbus Girls Tennis captures the State Team Tennis incredible average of once every two years..  This year--the Sailors lived up to the incredible tradition--while overcoming some adversity.

Columbus head coach Dave Will said, "The weather was interesting this year and a little opposite from last year. And we had a bunch of new kids that didn't have the experience and didn't get to the meets--a few challenges we haven't had to deal with for a couple of years."
"This team is a special group of young ladies--they did exactly what they're supposed to do--they worked hard when we had opportunities to play good competition they rose to the occasion."

Sailor Senior Lindsay McGonegle teamed with junior Lindsay McManus to also win the individual doubles title after finishing second in 2012.  McGonegle is  the perfect icey compliment---to the fiery McManus---  Both were driven to overcome the pain of finishing second in both doubles and team competition last year.

McGonegle said, "It's a great feeling--when I was younger and I'd come out and watch tennis--I hoped one day I would be there--I watched them win state--I hoped like one day I'd do that--and this weekend it was incredible."

McManus said, "I hate to lose  and in the off season -- I was just trying to do any little thing that can help--us win the state tournament."

Sinnot along with McManus also outstanding soccer players---and on the same day they played two matches in the individual tournament-- they drove from Ankeny to Denver to help the Sailors win a Regional Soccer game.

Sinnott said, "Having a couple two hour matches in the individual competition and then driving home getting to our soccer game three minutes before it started-- playing an eighty minute soccer game and then going back to Ankeny not going home and then playing in the team competition the next day. I mean it was all worth it though in the end!!"
