Waterloo native accused of killing 9-year-old son

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (KWWL) -

A woman with Iowa ties is accused of killing her 9-year-old son, Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan.

Family and friends held a memorial for Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan in Steamboat Springs, Colorado Monday to remember the nine-year old who couldn't fit enough skiing into his schedule.

Asher died early Wednesday morning when investigators say his mother, Lisa Lesyshen, shot him several times before shooting herself.

Lesyshen is alive and is being treated a Denver hospital.

On Friday, she was charged with first-degree murder, child abuse leading to death and domestic violence.

The University of Iowa Registrars Office says a Michael Kirlan and Lisa Lesyshen-Kirlan both attended Iowa during the 1980's. Their wedding picture was also announced in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. Lisa is also a Waterloo West High Alum.
