ANKENY (KWWL) -

Former Iowa Hawkeye football player Matthew Whitaker says he is running for the Senate.

The Republican announced his candidacy Monday at a press conference in Ankeny.

The Des Moines lawyer grew up in Ankeny. He also served as U.S. Attorney for the southern district of Iowa from 2004 to 2009.

Whitaker says he would like to cut government spending, particularly on foreign aid to Egypt.

Whitaker joins Republican David Young in vying for the seat.

Rep. Bruce Braley, a Democrat, is also running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Tom Harkin.
