RIver crests in Cedar Rapids without major issues, preparations worked

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar River in Cedar Rapids crested at 18.23 feet early Sunday morning and the city didn't see much flooding.

In the New Bohemia neighborhood on the southeast side of the city many volunteers helped sandbag businesses. In 2004 a similar crest flooded the streets but this flood did not.

Since the record flooding in 2008 the city has made changes to the way it prepares. Thanks to those changes, and the number of volunteers, much of the city is free of floodwater.

"The volunteers have been incredible," said Craig Hanson, Public Works Maintenance Manager. "If you come to the New Bohemia area here in Cedar Rapids you just see all the sandbags that the volunteers made. It just shows what our community really is.

The Cedar River is still above flood stage in Cedar Rapids. That means boat ramps and some streets will remain closed until the water levels drop.
