Cedar Rapids students hold open house

Some Cedar Rapids area high school students put their hard work on display Sunday and you could live in it. Throughout the school year, students built a home through the Cedar Rapids High School student-built house project.

Sunday, an open house was held so people are able to check the house out but although it has already been purchased.  The program, now in its 41st year, builds one house per school year.   The house is built entirely by the students with a little help from professionals.

"Not only does it provide students with the chance to experience the building trades but it also gives them a chance to work with others, problem solve, use collaborative learning, all the skills any job would require." Said David Smith, the instructor of the Cedar Rapids Community Schools Building and Trades program.

This year's home was built as part of the Cedar Rapids flood recovery program.  The lot it was built on flooded in 2008.
