David Young announces candidacy for Senator Tom Harkin's seat

Posted: Updated:

An aide to Senator Charles Grassley announced he wants to join Grassley in the U.S. Senate.

David Young worked as Senator Grassley's Chief of Staff for the past seven years.

In Van Meter on Saturday, Young mailed in the paperwork to run for the vacant seat that will be left by Senator Tom Harkin next year.

David Young is the first Republican to officially announce his candidacy for the seat. While Young admits he may be lacking in name recognition right now, he has a strategy to make up for lost time.

"There's no where to go but up. I quit my job, and I'm slogging this out for the next 17 months all over Iowa, every county, multiple times," said David Young.

Another Republican, former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker, plans to announce his candidacy Monday in Ankeny.
