JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for residents of two rural Johnson County neighborhoods due to flooding of the Iowa River.

Residents living in the Riverview Estates neighborhood off of Stewart Road NE and the Izaak Walton League area near Oakcrest Hill Road SE were evacuating the area Thursday evening, according to Johnson County Emergency Management.

Residents were told at 6 p.m. they needed to gather their pets and leave. They were given four hours to do so.

After that time, officials will discontinue all services to that area. Utilities to the Riverview Estates neighborhood have already been shut off.

Each neighborhood has less than 20 homes each, according to emergency management.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is conducting the evacuation. They're also asking residents of nearby, low-lying areas to voluntarily evacuate.

The evacuation comes after the Johnson County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution proclaiming a civil emergency and authorizing the board chairperson, Janelle Rettig, to issue orders of mandatory evacuation.

Residents displaced by the evacuation should call the disaster call center at (319) 337-8657. The call center is open through 8 p.m.

After that time, residents can call the United Way by dialing 211 or 1-866-469-2211, available 24 hours per day.
