EPA addresses Chamberlain Manufacturing odors

A representative from the Environmental Protection Agency visited Waterloo Wednesday to meet with neighbors near the former Chamberlain Manufacturing Company site.

During demolition of the property, chemicals were exposed, emitting odors into the area. The source of the odors was located and covered with sand and plastic. No chemicals harmful to health have been detected.

Soil samples did detect contaminants in the groundwater, however. Since the discovery, officials have helped install vapor intrusion mitigation systems in consenting households. These devices prevent fumes from the contaminated water from flowing up through a given house.
Site workers are also now equipped with real-time air monitoring.

Chamberlain Manufacturing is currently developing a plan to clean the contaminated groundwater.
The City of Waterloo hopes to have the area completely demolished and replaced with green space this fall.
