NEW HARTFORD (KWWL) -

Officials in New Hartford are suggesting that residents evacuate as Beaver Creek continues to rise, while a shelter for those choosing to evacuate the town has opened.

Early Monday morning, water was rushing over Ridge Avenue, three miles west of New Hartford.

Butler County Emergency Manager Mitch Nordmeyer says Ridge Avenue acts as a dike for the town. He says if water goes over that road, there is a good possibility New Hartford will flood.

Water is also running over parts of Highway 57, west of New Hartford, and then again west of Parkersburg.

In 2008, water washed out Ridge Avenue, flooding the whole town.

Nordmeyer says the American Red Cross and Bremer County Emergency Management have set up an emergency shelter at the Boyd Community Building in Shell Rock.

The evacuation is not mandatory at this point, but officials are suggesting that residents leave before flooding gets worse.
