Wet weather ruining holiday weekend plan, costing businesses money

Grover Weber and Gavin Curtis have been looking forward to Memorial Day weekend. The good friends just bought a boat and couldn't wait to test it out at Coralville Lake.

"We went fishing, caught a few fish," said Weber, who lives in Grand Mound. "We got the kids. We're camping but it aint as fun as it should be."

That's because the weather wasn't exactly what they were hoping for.

"We've had to stay inside," said Curtis, who lives in Muscatine. "We were planning on going fishing, boating, and everything kind of came to a halt."

The weather didn't just cancel plans. It cost businesses some money. Memorial Day weekend is usually the kickoff of the summer season for the Coralville Lake Marina but was dead this holiday.

"People usually come in and check out their boat and come out and boat and fill it up with gas and come into the showroom and buy accessories," said Dan Rogers, Coralville Lake Marina Owner. "None of that's happening."

It's been a problem all through spring. Sales are down because it's hard to get people to buy boats when they can't use them.

"It's been a crazy one this year with the wet weather in April and now this weather in May," said Rogers. "It's kind of a bummer."

Businesses and boaters hope the weather clears up soon, in time summer.
