CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cougar Electric Car program at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids hosted an electric car race at Hawkeye Downs Saturday.

High schoolers from four different states participated in the race. The students design, build, and drive the battery-powered electric vehicles.

The goal is to be the car that can do the most laps in an hour.

"It is what is engineering like," said Barry Wilson, Kennedy's Electric Car Advisor. "What is alternative energy all about, how good can you make alternative energy cars."

These Midwest speed trials included the endurance race on the track as well as braking efficiency tests and a handling competition.
