CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
Runners laced up their sneakers for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department Memorial 5K run and walk. The 13th annual race was held at College Community Schools in Cedar Rapids.
The money raised from the run benefits a memorial fund for the families of fallen firefighters.
"It truly is a second family," said Nick Miller, Race Organizer. "So when you have a tragedy like a firefighter that passes away, it effects you like it's a family member and so we always try to rally around the surviving family member and do whatever we can to help."
Nearly 500 people registered for this year's race. That's more than double the amount that have ran in the past.
